CHAMPION OF THE CENTENARIES
Corinthians was always a club marked by great conquests, mainly in soccer.
So, even today, the club is respected and accepted by its opponents as the
Champion of Centenaries, a honor conquered by merit and not for favor. In
1922, Centenary of the Brazil's Independence, the club won the São Paulo
Championship defeating 2-0 Paulistano in the final game. América, that won
the Rio de Janeiro Championship in the same year, also wanted the honor to
be called the Champion of the Centenary and proposed a duel to
Corinthians. Result: Corinthians, the champion of the champions of the
centenary, 2-0 América. The glory became stronger 32 years later, when
Corinthians, proving its vocation to big deeds, conquered also the São
Paulo Championship in 1954, year of the fourth centenary of the foundation
of São Paulo city. (...)1 x I against Palmeiras, with Luizinho and Nei
goals. The team entered in history with this line-up: Gilmar, Homero and
Alan; Idário, Goiano and Roberto; Cláudio, Luizinho, Baltazar, Rafael
and Simão. The coach was the ever remembered Osvaldo Brandão, who
later
led the club to another historical conquest (the São Paulo Championship in
1977).
